The Wellington Corporate Dodgeball Championship was held in Newton on 20 May, with Deloitte Cobras taking out the inaugural tournament.
Wellington Indoor Sports Centre hosted the event on Saturday, which featured 12 teams across five Wellington accounting firms; KPMG, Deloitte, BDO, Grant Thornton and EY.
Tournament organiser Brendon Beattie said it was fantastic to see a number of people, many of whom had not played Dodgeball before, participating in the event: “We had over 80 people registered for the tournament and 30 games played throughout the day. There was plenty of enthusiasm around the Centre and a great display of skill from all teams involved.
“The tournament highlighted some genuine emerging talent and the potential to grow the game of Dodgeball in New Zealand. Importantly, the feedback I’ve had from participants was really positive and it was encouraging to see a large number of people getting involved in the sport”, Beattie said.
Teams competed across three pools, with the top two teams from each pool advancing, and the next two highest ranked teams rounding out the quarter final draw. In the end, KPMG G1 and the Deloitte Cobras were the last teams standing, with the Cobras taking out the final by 4-3.
“The two teams who featured in the final had very different skill sets, but both were equally up to the task and it made for a thrilling final”, Beattie said.
The tournament will be used as a stepping stone to re-establishing an on-going dodgeball competition in the New Zealand capital.
